2021 New Year's Resolutions

Happy New Year!  As with every new year, I set resolutions.  I don't always hit them, but I still like the idea of setting intentions for the coming year.

It was a bit harder to come up with resolutions for this year.  There is still so much uncertainty in the world.  I know there will always be some, but I think we can all agree that this pandemic definitely provided way more than any of us could have imagined.

I took a look back at my previous resolutions when thinking of what I'd like to focus on in 2021, and it was interesting to see how some things were the same year after year - like health and organization, and some fell on and off the list over the years - like creating routines and 'resting' on Sundays.

In the end, here's what I came up with for 2021.

1.  Create a cleaning schedule.  For years, I have been one to want to clean everything at once.  That worked out well when I didn't have as much to clean, but having a bigger place now, it's become something I tend to dread.  Sure, I love the sense of accomplishment after it is done, and how everything is clean at once, but I don't necessarily love the time it takes to get everything that way.  Towards the end of 2020, I started doing things a little different, and cleaning a little bit each weekday so that by the end of the week, all the 'normal' cleaning was done.  I thought it would bother me, because again, I was all about having everything all at the same time, but I found I didn't mind it one bit.  I wasn't quite as consistent around the holidays, but hope to get back to it this year, expand on it to include some of the 'extra' tasks - the stuff you don't do every time, but is still good to do annually, semi-annual, etc. and really find something that works for me.  I plan to check out the million schedules available on Pinterest, but I would welcome any specific recommendations, should you do something similar!

2.  Organize.  I have two areas I would like to focus on this year - the kitchen, and my extra decor.  I love kitchen 'things'.  For the past few years, my birthday and Christmas lists have included quite a few kitchen items, and between those and my collection of cookbooks, room is getting tighter and tighter in the kitchen.  My extra decor is stored throughout the house, and as my decorating has changed, I have added things, but not really gotten rid of things.  It all needs to be gone through, and then reorganized in a much more orderly fashion than it currently is now.  Both are going to be big projects, because let's be honest, I am a bit of a hoarder when it comes to both kitchen items and decor items, but I know it'll make such a difference.

3.  Blog 3 times a week.  I would like to get back to consistently blogging.  My plan is to post at least 3 times a week, with posts coming out Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  As I get back into the swing of things, that may change to add in another day, but that will most likely be the schedule.  I am really excited to get back to it!

4.  Focus on wellness.  It wouldn't be a set of my resolutions without one on health and fitness, would it?!  I am calling it wellness, because I feel like that is all encompassing.  Some of the things I would like to do to help with that include getting fresh air daily with a walk (weather permitting), meditating (I hear that can do wonders, and Peloton has a whole meditation section in their app), less mindless scrolling, and getting enough sleep...just to name a few.

As most people do, I have high hopes for 2021.  I feel like the beginning of any new year provides that feeling of a fresh start, and there is so much hope in the possibilities of what the rest of the year can bring.  I know everything going on in the world didn't change overnight, but there is definitely hope.

  1. I was just thinking about my extra decor and how much I have when I was putting away Christmas. I want to get rid of some of mine and figure out a better way to organize it all!

    1. YES! We can help keep each other accountable on this one. I think when you first are creating a home, you keep everything 'just in case'. But once a bit of time has passed, there isn't quite as much need to keep all of the things!

  2. I love the idea of creating a cleaning schedule and have been pondering doing it myself. I'm just like you in that I like to have the whole house clean at once, but it's just SO MUCH WORK to do it all at once. Let me know how you like it... I may be making some changes, too!
