Two Ways to Save Money While Shopping Online

I am gearing up to do the bulk of my Christmas shopping this week, and thought it was the perfect time to share the two ways I save money while shopping online.

1.  Rakuten.  Formerly known as Ebates, Rakuten has been my go to for years (since 2014 to be exact!).  With Rakuten, you receive cash back when you make purchases through the website or app.  The cash back is a percentage of your purchase.  The percentage can vary - sometimes it's 1%, and other times it can be over 10%!  Rakuten also provides current coupon and promo codes if the stores if offering any discounts.

To use Rakuten, you can create an account, then search on the store you will be shopping at.  If it is a store that you can shop through Rakuten, it will take you to the store page.  From there you can click on the 'Shop Now' button, and it will take you to the store website, where you shop as normal.  If you make a purchase, then you will receive cash back into your Rakuten account.

Payments are every three months, and you can set up how you would like to receive your cash back in your account.

Of course, not every store is on Rakuten, but there is quite a good selection.  I often use it for Macy's, Target, LOFT, and even lululemon.

You can click here to sign up.

2.  Ibotta.  I was first introduced to the Ibotta app through Lindsay (post here).  I originally started using the app for groceries, but have since taken advantage of some of the cash back offers.  Like Rakuten, Ibotta offers varying cash back at certain retailers.

To use, just search the name of the retailer.  If there is an offer, it will populate, and all you have to do is click the 'Shop' button.  You can also get cash back on gift card purchases!

The cash back is added to your Ibotta account, and once you hit $20, you can access the cash back and transfer to one of your accounts (PayPal, Venmo, etc.).

You can click here to sign up.  My referral code is UWVIRIB.

You can find some of the same retailers on both Rakuten and Ibotta, so I suggest checking out both before you shop to ensure you are getting the best percentage of cash back!

Happy shopping!

  1. I love these apps! Do you use Fetch? It’s more for groceries but it’s one of my favorites!

  4. Yes yes yes to both of these! We use them and love them so much! We've saved so much money these last three years. I wish we'd started using both of them sooner.
