Weekend Recap: 5th Birthday & Home Sweet Home

Hey all!  Happy Monday.  I hope everyone had a great weekend.  Mine was spent with family, which always makes for a good one!

I split my time between Indy and Pontiac this weekend.  The first part of the weekend was in Indy to celebrate my nephew's 5th birthday!  I cannot believe he is that old.  It just seems so big!

My dad and I got to town, then picked up Portillo's for lunch.  I love that Indy now has Portillo's.  It used to be I could only get my Chicago hot dog fix up north, but luckily they are slowly making their way south, and apparently east.  They just need to make it even further south to St. Louis!  Once we got to my brother's, my mom and I headed out for some quick birthday shopping.  Amazon let me down this week, and lost part of my nephew's birthday present!  It keep pushing the arrival date, so I had hope, but then it was lost.  Soooo to Target it was!  We also stopped by Party City to grab some balloons for the birthday celebration.

The birthday boy picked pizza for dinner, so we had that, then opened presents.  My parents got him a bike, and he had the coolest reaction - he was so excited.  And he was pretty excited about the monster trucks and kinetic sand I got him, too!

We all called it a bit of an early night - I think between work and travel, everyone was a bit tired.

We had one of my very favorite breakfasts the next morning, my mom's French toast.  Gosh, it was so good.  My sister in law and I headed out to the local farmer's market after breakfast.  I love farmer's markets and this one was awesome!  They had so many good things there.  We picked up some produce, and then these ridiculously amazing egg rolls from Mathoo's.  My sister in law actually interviewed the owner (video here), and she has such a cool story.  And the egg rolls are seriously the best I have had.

Once we got back from the farmer's market, we headed outside to play.  My nephews LOVE being outside, and it was really fun playing with them.  My brother got a new smoker/grill, and had put on ribs in the morning, which we then had for lunch.  They were delicious.  And we had sweet corn from the farmer's market which was so darn good.  A summer meal at its finest!

Over the weekend we also played a lot with some of my old toys.  As my parents were cleaning out the garage, they came across a bunch of old toys they had held on to.  I had a ton of cooking-type toys, and the boys had a blast playing with them while we were there.  And after seeing them again, it makes total sense why I love cooking so much.  I mean, I had a mini mixer...how cool is that?!  Plus I had a toy McDonald's Big Mac and French fry cartoon...again, how cool?!

We headed out late afternoon, and luckily had an uneventful drive back to my parents'.  Since we ate big for both breakfast and lunch, we settled on popcorn for a dinner snack.  My dad makes THE BEST popcorn, and it's always such a treat to have.  With all the travel and playing, I was tired, so I went to bed pretty early...again.

It was super nice to sleep in Sunday morning.  Once we were up, we went for a walk, and checked out one of the local parks.  My hometown had a storm roll through last week, and one of the local parks got hit pretty bad.  It was insane to see some of these very large, mature trees down.

I shared this on instagram, but another find from my parents clean out of their garage, and they found this old typewriter table they had gotten while out junking.  They had no use for it, so I was lucky enough to get it.  I thought it would be perfect for my record player!  I hit it with a wire brush to get any loose rust off, my dad cleaned the top with some car cleaner (it's some type of faux leather), washed the rest of it all off, and then later my dad hit it with some clear spray to keep it from rusting anymore.

It was the nicest day there - perfect for the windows to be opened, and I swear that fresh air smell is just pure summer.  Plus we rounded out the afternoon with burgers on the grill and more of the sweet corn we picked up at the farmer's market.  It was so darn good.

I was up in the air on when I would actually drive back home, but waking up in my own bed won out, and I left shortly after lunch.  The drive was uneventful (thankfully) and it was nice to be home.

I lit a candle, grabbed a drink, and settled in on the couch for a little bit of relaxation before calling it another early night.  Sometimes sleep is just the best!

Hope you all had a good one!
