Laurie & Emily's Great Adventure: The Pioneer Woman Mercantile

Last week, my mom and I embarked on our 'great adventure' - our mother / daughter road trip!  I asked my mom to type up an itinerary and she named the file Emily & Laurie's Great Adventure, so it just stuck.  And yes, I am flipping it to be Laurie & Emily's, just because I feel it's more respectful / traditional / I am not sure of the word is to have my mom's name go first.  Silly, I know.  Anyways, to give you a little background, my mom and I both really enjoy The Pioneer Woman and Fixer Upper, so when we discovered it was about 6 hours to Oklahoma, then another 6 (plus a little) to Magnolia Market, we decided we had to make a go of it.

First stop on our trip was The Pioneer Woman Mercantile and it was fabulous.  We left my apartment early Monday morning and made our way to Oklahoma.  The trip was pretty uneventful, although I will say that both of us were a bit surprised at how hilly Oklahoma was.  Up and down and winding roads.  We had to take a few two lane highways on our drive that had lots of no passing zones, but we really lucked out and didn't get stuck behind anyone we needed to get around.  We got to Pawhuska late lunch time and immediately got in line for the restaurant.  I was surprised at the amount of people that were there for a Monday afternoon, and we had about a good half hour wait in line before we were seated.  It's set up very nicely, though.  Fans are set up around the line that not only provide a breeze, but they look like they can mist water when it's really warm, benches for people to sit on while they wait, and one of the workers came and passed out small water bottles.

After we made it in, my mom and I just couldn't stop taking in all the details and how cute the place was.  At my insistance, we ordered the queso, which was super good.  I opted for the enchiladas as my meal, while my mom got a fried chicken sandwich.  Both were delicious!  My enchiladas came with the fiesta black beans and those may have been one of my favorite things!  Our drinks were served to us in huge mason jars, which we both really loved.  They fit the feel of the restaurant, and for us, it eliminated the need for refills.  Our waitress was adorable and super nice.  The service was just all around good.  After lunch, we headed over to the shop part.  There are so many cute little things, you almost need to look around twice to see it all.  My mom picked up a round cutting board, while I grabbed the latest issue of her magazine, a small baking sheet (the size was too cute), a colander, and a plastic wrap dispenser.  The bathrooms are also located off the shop area, and let me tell you - I think those are the nicest public restrooms ever.  Super cute and so clean!  You can head up stairs where to the bakery, which also offers drinks and candy.  It was empty up there, and while I am sure it fills up quickly on busier days, if you want a place to just hang out, this is it.  Ree's cookbooks are all over the place, as are her other books, if you want to spend some time flipping through them while enjoying a treat or coffee.

Pawhuska was a bit bigger than I was expecting, with a larger downtown, so my mom and I walked around to stretch our legs a bit and explore.  We didn't really stop in any of the shops (we weren't looking to buy anything and not really in the mood to window shop, either), but it is a good option if you want to do more than just The Merc.

We had a bit of a drive to our hotel in Ponca City, so we headed out late afternoon.  The highlight of the drive was seeing the gates for Drummond Ranch!  I told my mom we should have stopped and gotten a picture with the sign.  (Side note - certain dates you can go up and tour the lodge and you can find those on the website, but unfortunately we weren't there during that time.  It looks like October dates have been added, though!).  Throughout our adventure, we stayed at Hampton Inn & Suites hotels, which all worked out really well.  We both were tired from the day, so we were out early in anticipation of the next leg of our adventure - Waco!

All in all, this was a great day.  It was super fun to visit The Merc.  If you are fan of The Pioneer Woman, I would definitely recommend stopping by if you can!  My only regret is not saving room for a sweet treat and a spicy cowgirl coffee before we left!
