Friday Favorites: A Bookshelf, Retirement & Devotional

Happy Friday!

It seems like Monday was so long ago - I am having a hard time even remembering what all happened this week!  Which isn't saying all that much - I swear my memory gets worse and worse.

These are a few highlights I do remember, though.

First up, I got my bookshelf in from Ballard Design!  When I ordered it, I don't think it was supposed to ship until next week, but it arrived Wednesday.  I was able to work from home, so I brought it in as soon as I could.  It was a beast, though -  heavy and awkward!  I ended up having to lay it down and basically push it through the door.  There was no way I was actually going to be able to lift it.  I am so glad I was able to be home, though, because shortly after it was delivered we had a big thunderstorm roll through.  I put it together that night, and think it's really perfect for the space.  I had two minor freak outs during the putting together phase.

One of the washers they provided didn't fit.  I, of course, called my dad to see if it would be a big issue if one of the screws didn't have a washer.  While I was talking to him, I went through my box of goodies (basically all the extra screws, dowels, wires, anything from previous projects), and was able to find a washer that worked.  My dad always tells me to keep those things after we finish a project, and that advice has come in handy more than once!  So although it may seem hoarder-ish in these days of purging and simplifying, sometimes it pays to keep all the little things!

When I lifted the shelf up and put it in place, I noticed that the top wasn't flush against one of the legs.  Again, I reached out to my dad, and he said to just loosen the screws a bit, push down on the top, and screw back in.  I was having some trouble keeping the top flush, while screwing, so I grabbed a bunch of cookbooks to weigh the top down.  It worked like a charm!  Now, all I need to do is start decorating.  Time to gather all my little knickknacks!

Thursday night we had a retirement happy hour for a coworker.  He is such a wonderful guy and will be sorely missed.  While this retirement is beyond deserved, it's also sad for those us that will miss his presence everyday.  I just feel really lucky to work with such great people that a retirement like this feels like such a loss.  I know we will keep in touch, though!

Sometimes my devotional in the morning just really speaks to me.  It's funny how that works out.  Definitely His doing!  I read this on Thursday and it was exactly what I needed to read.

Here's a look at the blog this week:

  2. I love your shelf and I love it when a devotion is perfectly planned. I have been reminded that rest is necessary and we are called to rest in the scriptures a lot over the last few weeks.

  5. Such a pretty shelf. I always try to put the furniture together myself and then my husband "fixes" it when he gets home. I am so not a handy person. Have you seen The Holderness Video We Are Never Putting This Together? It's a riot and I could totally relate to the frustration of trying to put together a whole piece of furniture using just pictures and no words.
