Weekend Recap: Farewell Christmas!

While we are almost upon a new weekend, I wanted to recap this past weekend when my mom came to visit.

My mom got in early to avoid traffic, so she perused some stores while I was finishing up the work day (and work week!).  I headed straight home and she arrived not much later, bearing gifts!  She had stopped by Trader Joe's and picked up some fresh flowers.  I mentioned around Christmas how having some fresh flowers would be so nice, and I needed to start just picking up some at the grocery store to brighten the place up, and she remembered that and made such a pretty and simple arrangement for me!  We pretty much got right to work, undecorating my apartment.  As we got into it, we realized we kind of went about it wrong.  Since space is limited in my place, we should have taken down the Christmas tree first, then everything else, because then we would have had all that extra space to place things before packing them up.  Lesson learned.  I was thankfully able to fit almost everything into my original containers, which was a feat in itself, since I am constantly adding to my decorations year after year.  My mom brought food for us to enjoy while she was here, and Friday night we had tacos.  It's been forever since I had homemade tacos like that, and my love for Chi-Chi's taco seasoning has been renewed.  Yum!  While we were taking down things, we were also adding in touches of winter.  I still love my winter wreath my mom and I made out of garland, and then white bottle brush trees and pine cones just add a little bit of seasonal decor around my apartment.  I was tired, so we called it a night, and left the tree to tackle the next day.

In the morning, we watched TV for a little bit before we got going for the day.  Mom brought breakfast, and we had hard boiled eggs, turkey bacon and hoska.  Houska is a Czech bread and it is the best thing ever.  My grandma gets it for my mom and it's always such a treat!  It has raisins in it, with almonds - honestly I don't know what is all in it, but I know that it is goooood!  Makes the best toast!  We got the tree down and everything vacuumed up.  My mom and I laughed, because we both us fake trees, yet we still end up having to vacuum after because they still can be messy.  We normally do some pretty good damage shopping when we are together, but this time we definitely just kept it to basics and ran some errands.  We headed to Costco to get my beloved Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels, as well as some other odds and ends.  I seriously love that place - they just have such neat stuff!  I had to make an exchange at the mall and my mom got some things.  After which, we did a little mall walking.  We saw other ladies doing the same, but they were hardcore.  One twosome had matching fanny packs - that is definitely the way to go!  It was sad walking around the mall, because so many stores are empty or closing.  We stopped by Michaels to pick up something for a little craft I have planned.  Hopefully I will be sharing that with you soon!  It was back home for lunch, which was my mom's homemade chicken noodle soup and salad.  One of my January goals is to clean out my jewelry, and I was able to rope my mom into helping me do that.  I got rid of A TON and was able to fit everything into my jewelry box.  While it's only been a few days, it's been so nice having everything so neat and organized.  After my mom left, I relaxed a bit.  I swear, she has more energy than anyone I know - she wears me out!  I did get motivated to do a little more organizing and cleaned out my gift wrapping container.  And as part of my plan to have more relaxing Sundays, I got started on my laundry and painted my nails.  Wild Saturday night!

The forecast for Sunday was freezing rain and sleet, so I went to the gym first thing, and then hunkered down at home for the rest of the day, waiting for the winter weather to hit.  And waiting, and waiting, because it never hit!  I stayed home from church, and basically was lazy all day, because I thought it would be an ice rink on the roads and the only thing that happened was some rain later that night.  Oh well.  Guess it's better to be safe than sorry!

Overall, it was a really nice weekend and I am always thankful when my mom is willing to come help me out.  Although it was a short trip, it was one of my favorites, because we were able to get so much done, and also take it easy at the same time.

Luckily we are almost to the weekend again - Happy Friday Eve!

Linking up with Annie.

  1. I love all of your winter touches. That sled with the ice skates draped over it is PERFECT. I wish I could do something like that here, but it would probably be ridiculous considering none of us own sleds or ice skates down here in GA. Haha. Happy Thursday!

  2. Aww mom's are the best!! And they do seem to always have energy! We just took down our Christmas stuff this weekend but I leave anything with a snow theme out too :)

  3. I love how you styled the fireplace! Super cute. :)

  4. That is so sweet of your mom to be willing to help you. I'm sure the extra time with you makes her happy :) It always sounds like you two have the best time together!

  5. I know I've said it before but I just love your and your Moms relationship! That was so sweet of her to remember and bring you fresh flowers and all that yummy food!! So glad you guys had fun together!
