4 Tips To Help You Stay Active While Working A Desk Job

Today I thought I would share a few tips on staying active at work, specifically if you have a desk job.  This is something I need to improve on myself, so I thought if I shared my ideas, then it would also hold me a bit more accountable, as well.

1.  Take the stairs.  I realize I am stating the obvious, but I am always amazed at how many people will take the elevator just one floor.  It's a simple and easy way to get your heart pumping.  While I don't take the stairs in the morning (I get way too warm with all my stuff I lug into work), I try to always take them after lunch or going to meetings.

2.  Walk while you wait for the printer.  This is something I always do.  If I am printing something that takes a few minutes (or longer), I use that time to walk back and forth in the copy room.  It's kind of silly, but honestly, what else are you going to do while you wait?  For me, it's about 10 steps one way, so I feel like I can get an extra 100 steps in no time at all!

3.  Set a reminder to get up and move.  For awhile, I would set a reminder at the same time everyday to get up and walk the stairs.  Just down to the first floor and then back up.  It took no time at all and I always felt better afterwards.  I actually heard this from a girl I used to work with, and thought it was a great idea.  If you aren't a fan of the stairs (or don't have any), you can get up and just do a lap around your floor - another thing I have heard from a coworker.

4.  Park far away.  Another easy way to get in some extra steps!  I will be honest - I don't park in the furthest corner possible, but definitely a few rows back!  This isn't just limited to work either.  I almost always park further back when going to the store, too.  I will be honest, part of that is because my parking skills are a bit lacking, but also to get in some extra steps.  If you wear heels to work, you might not be too keen on this idea, but something I notice with my coworkers is some of them wear different shoes to drive in and then change into their more professional footwear once they get in their building, or at their desk.

While these tips are nothing out of the ordinary, they are just little things you can do to try and keep yourself active while at work.

I'd love to hear if you do anything in particular to get yourself moving!

  1. This is great! I like how you walk while you use the copier--I'm going to remember that for myself! I always like when I have to take my classes to the library because instead of staying down there and having each class meet me, I walk my kids back and forth each period. I did that Friday and walked 3 miles at school haha!

  3. These are great tips! I was reading the first one and I thought "Oh, no way am I one of those people who takes the elevator one floor" and then I realized -- I take the escalator!! Haha! Oops, guilty as charged! :) Maybe I will try the steps this morning! I always walk in the hallways when I am on a phone call. Sometimes the calls are 45 minutes or an hour and it's amazing how many steps I can get in during that time!

  7. I was really shocked when I finally started wearing a fitbit to see how little I moved during the day! I do have a standing desk which also seems to help more than sitting. This is a fun post...may have to share my thoughts too!

  9. Yes to all of this! I've never understood why people take the elevator up just one or two floors. Even when I'm on the 6th floor, I take the stairs. Partly because I'm scared of an elevator breaking down :-P

  10. I love all of these! I SO wish we had a copy room so I could do that! Our printers are right at the end of all of our cubes so I would look like a dummy pacing back and forth in front of everyone! And I wish we had stairs in our building as well. We used to have them in our old building but we moved a few years back. I have a standup work station now and I stand most of the day. I love it becuase it makes me move around more than I did when I was just sitting all day! Great tips, Emily!

  13. All of these are great! My office is on the third floor and always always always take the stairs. I'm amazed as well when I see people take the elevator just to go one flight. I need to set a reminder to get up a move--- I tend to get "stuck" at my desk for far too long! But I work in a cube farm so I'm always nervous about setting an alarm and upsetting the people that sit by me.

  14. Great tips! And easy to incorporate too. Hilariously, I often take the elevator one floor up and I never think anything of it unless someone else gets in there with me and then it is a little embarrassing. We did get stand up desks in the office this year and I LOVE it!

  15. i love all of these but i definitely don't do them. when i used to work on the 3rd floor i took the stairs all the time because it was just enough to not get too hot, but now we moved to the 8th floor and i am so out of breath that there's no way i could do it with all the stuff i lug to and fro. i get the mail downstairs every day so i try and do the stairs then lol. and i park closer than i should, that's a good reminder to park far away. sometimes i get to work really early and i want to park close because i'm the only one there lol. when i wait for the elevator or my lunch to heat up in the microwave, i pace. i did it on purpose to start getting more steps/stay active but now it's habit and i never stand still anymore, no matter what i do. pace pace pace lol
