How I Plan My Blog Posts

When I first started blogging, and honestly, even up until a few months ago, I never really had a great blogging plan.  I would sometimes plan out posts ideas for the week, but that didn't always work.  Otherwise it was kind of a day by day thing.  That can add some unnecessary stress, because to me, blogging is more of a fun hobby - not something that I should be stressing about.  I finally have a good system in place, which is really simple, but I wanted to share.  Kelsey's post about balance reminded me that sharing even the smallest things, could potentially help others.

Every month, I print out Emily Ley's free downloadable monthly calendar.  I like using her calendars, because I think they are simple and pretty.  I fill out the days, then link ups.

For link ups that have a different topic each time, I print out the list, and keep them with my calendars.  I find it's easier for me to print them out and keep them together, rather than look them up online each month.

Once I get those, then I fill in other monthly link ups.  There are other posts that I do on a monthly basis so those get written down next.

I'll get those posts set, then I look at what days I have left.  The nice thing about the calendars is that they have a notes section on the left.  So if I think of any idea for a month, but don't end up using it, I can refer back for next time.

I also always use my favorite erasable pens for this, that way if something changes, I can change without having a bunch of scribbles on the page.  Also, it allows me to color code - all my posts go in one color and link ups in another, as a little reminder to myself that I need to link up with someone.

It helps so much having this done at the beginning of the month.  I always take a look at it each week to know what is coming ahead, in case I need to take certain pictures, or if something is a little more time intensive, I can get a head start on it.

As I said - it's not fancy or complicated, just something that has really helped me in the last few months.  I am curious to know if you plan posts, and if so, how you do it?!

Linking up with Lindsay and Whitney.

  3. This in itself was a really great idea for a post! I have an Erin C calendar that I absolutely love and I write the title of the post in each box. I tend to stick to a food theme on Tuesdays, fashion link up on Wednesdays, Fridays the Favs and Mondays is my choice with something uplifting, motivating home decor related or really anything. I hope you have a wonderful Tuesday!

  6. My system is almost identical to this-I need to get those pens though, because I do change my schedule sometimes and it would be great to not have to scribble it out!

  8. I have to admit that sometimes I still just kind of write to write, but over the past year I started writing posts on the weekends, and that helped out so much! That's such a good idea to include all the linkups on your calendar so you can plan ahead!

  10. I always get so excited about reading blog posts about a) organizing and b) blogging, so a post about organizing your blog posts was really fun to read! I do the same thing that you do... I print out a free online calendar and resize it to fit in my Erin Condren Life Planner, and then I fill in all of the link-ups and other ideas that I have. It's so nice to be able to see what I'm doing for the next month or two!

  11. Thank you for writing this! I am the worst at planning my posts-some weeks I am really on, and some I am not AT ALL. I love the idea of color coordinating and planning out linkups a month in advance, I have missed some good ones due to lack of planning.

  12. I've only just started my blog so at the moment haven't planned my posts at all. Thanks for the tip!

  13. I should do this, too - there are three or four link-ups that I keep forgetting about!

  14. This is so similar to what I'm doing! I have two planners. One I use day to day and one stays at home on my desk. I use the monthly calendar section to plot out my blog posts. Starting in January I wrote down all of the linkups that I wanted to participate in, and then I jotted down some ideas on different days for each month. In the notes section I also list ideas that have popped in my mind. Sometimes I use them that month and other times they're transferred to a new month. I love this simple yet successful approach!

  15. I should get better about link-ups! There are so many benefits to them. Thanks for sharing this post. I clicked on it quickly from BlogLovin because I always enjoy learning about others' blog routines, tips, and tricks!

  16. I have a blog calendar that I fill out for every month. I've done the printable ones and this year I'm using a fun one I found at TJ Maxx. I fill in the link up ideas like you and then have a running list of things I'd like to write about. I love your erasable pens! I haven't thought about those in years. I thought they were the coolest and didn't realize they were still being made.

  17. I try to do the same with my "happy" planner with a monthly view and then a weekly view prompting which posts I should be working on that are coming up. Sadly...most of the time my life gets so dang crazy that I'm still scrambling. Totally added these pens to my amazon cart.

  18. I love seeing how people organize/plan for blogging. I've gone back and forth over the years between using a planner and using my calendar app, but it definitely helps to see a full month view.
